The Art of Boudoir Photography
As told by your photographer, Marie-Ann Thornton
The definition of boudoir photography is perhaps outdated when we take into consideration what it really means to be a woman and what it means to step into your feminine power. I see a boudoir shoot as a form of self-care. A way to celebrate every inch, curve, bump and hollow of our femininity.
Through this experience, we create a space that allows you to express yourself, bare all and lean into an energy that is uniquely your own. With gentle posing, I will guide you through your boudoir photography session and capture a gallery of authentic, intimate and artistic images.
The experience
First and foremost, let’s connect. From there, we’ll allow the planning stage to unfold, exploring different themes, lingerie and outfits, posing preferences, comfortability in front of a camera and potential packages. On the day, I’ll welcome you into my Maitland studio and the preparation will begin. I will guide you through the two-hour boudoir shoot experience and there will be plenty of opportunities for outfit changes, sneak peaks and exploration of what makes you feel your most divinely feminine. Your photo reveal session will take place around a week later.
My style of boudoir photography
My boudoir photography style can be best described as natural; leaning into the candid and organic nature of lifestyle photography. And while I offer gentle guidance and support with different poses, backgrounds and style changes, I will be guided by what feels best for you. A boudoir shoot is an intimate experience and I want you to feel embodied and empowered from your initial booking, through to your photo reveal session.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
I’m happy to offer suggestions during our planning session, but I usually suggest 3-4 outfits that may include matching bra and knickers, g-strings, suspenders, stockings, garters, bodysuits, corsets, camisoles and teddies. As long as you’re comfortable wearing it, it fits you well and suits your body type, we can make it work.
You will also need heels.
-
You need to bring your own lingerie and shoes to the shoot. I do have some props, robes, harnesses and other accessories that we can add to finish your look and I’m always on the lookout for new items to add to my collection.
If you’d like to use a specific item or prop, like a feather boa, flowers, veil, hat, hairpiece, ribbons, handcuffs, whip etc, please bring it along.
-
All my packages include professional make-up and hair styling on site. My stylists will work with you to create a look to suit your boudoir experience and personal style.
-
I love to shoot tasteful nudes! However, if you’re after a magazine centrefold, this might not be the shoot for you.
-
Yes and no. While I certainly use software to enhance and touch up your photos to bring out your best features, it’s important that your photos still look like you. I prefer to use poses and lighting to obscure any areas you’re concerned about rather than airbrush a client to within an inch of their life. The result is a far more natural representation of who you and that is a beautiful thing.
-
Absolutely! I work with women, trans-women and couples of all sizes and shapes. I believe that every woman is beautiful and aim to create an experience that makes you believe it too! I will work with what makes you comfortable and have a million tips and tricks for poses to flatter your body shape.
-
Never without your written permission. All the images I share on my website and social media channels are either models who have been paid for their photos or clients who have given me their written consent.
-
I prefer to work one on one with my clients, simply because sometimes an ‘audience’ can make you feel more self-conscious. Talk to me if this is a concern for you.
-
No. Each client is entitled to feel comfortable and empowered and we find this works best with just the client and myself in the studio. However, we have set up a VIP group (ladies only) on Facebook where clients can share their shoot experience some of their photos.
-
I offer couple’s boudoir shoots, but I specialise in showcasing the female form or anyone who identifies as female. I happily work with all members of the LGBTQI community. If you wish to be photographed in a feminine aesthetic, I’d love to work with you.
-
Absolutely. Things come up and sometimes a date no longer works, so we’re happy to change your shoot provided you can give us at least 5 days’ notice.
