Boudoir photoshoot tips for an uplifting, authentic experience

We see investing in a boudoir photoshoot as an act of self care. It’s about choosing to see yourself through a lens of authenticity and celebrate the most vulnerable parts of yourself. To help you feel at ease going into your session, we’ve prepared this list of boudoir photoshoot tips, along with what to expect at a boudoir photo shoot.

Firstly, here’s what to expect at a boudoir photo shoot

Boudoir photography is a form of art, so it’s important to view your session as a step toward embracing yourself completely – flaws, marks, jiggles, and all. It’s about relinquishing the opinions of others and looking at yourself with kinder eyes. In terms of what to expect at a boudoir photo shoot, you will be:

  • Gently guided and posed by boudoir photographer, Marie-Ann Thornton

  • Encouraged to move and express your most authentic self

  • Left to decide what you wear, how you pose and how the session unfolds: it’s about feeling comfortable within yourself.

As long as you are confident with your body, we can create beautiful, uplifting boudoir photos for you to fall in love with. Now, onto our photoshoot tips.

Boudoir photoshoot tip #1 – Wear what makes you feel gorgeous

There are no definitive outfits required for a boudoir photoshoot, however most women choose between lingerie or going nude/partially-nude. When it comes to lingerie, we recommend shopping in person so you can try each piece on and see how it sits and forms against your body. When booking with Maru Collective, you’ll have complimentary access to our private lingerie shopping experience where we can guide you through garments that accentuate your curves and silhouette. During your session you’ll have time for 2-3 outfit changes.

Boudoir photoshoot tip #2 – Avoid the comparison game

We all have different body types and figures, which means photoshoots and poses I’ve done with women in the past, may not work for you. And this is beautiful. We all have different flexibility levels, mobility, comfortability and aspects of our body that we like to accentuate or focus less on. To truly embody boudoir, focus on your own individual experience and avoid comparing yourself to others.

Boudoir photoshoot tip #3 – Talk with your boudoir photographer

One of the most important boudoir photoshoot tips we have is to choose a boudoir photographer you feel totally comfortable with. Baring all in a boudoir photoshoot is both private and intimate, so there needs to be a level of trust with your photographer. Prior to your session, we’ll have a phone call and an in-person planning meeting to go over your goals, style, vision and any special requests you have. This will allow you to really get a feel for the atmosphere, prior to your boudoir photoshoot.

Ultimately, boudoir is about enjoying the experience and celebrating your authentic self. We can’t wait to be a part of your self love journey.
