5 Ways to set New Year's resolutions that resonate

We all have an inner-critic. And with January comes a flood of unnecessary criticism and an overwhelming feeling that you need to make big changes to be content with yourself. A lot of this is centred around our appearance and it’s exhausting to say the least. I could tout the usual New Year's resolution parody: make more time for yourself, take care of your body in a kind way and ignore all of the diet culture and body shaming… But that’s easier said than done. Instead, I wanted to bring you five ways to write New Year’s resolutions that resonate with you. Small goals that make you smile and enrich the little areas of your life. I want you to start by asking yourself:

1. What is your relationship with your body like?

Rather than focussing on shrinking your body, or picking apart your flaws, I encourage you to truly look at the relationship you have with your body. What do you see when you look in the mirror? How does your body make you feel? What is your body capable of doing? Where can you find beauty in everything that is uniquely you? Positive self talk in front of a mirror and journaling can be a wonderful way to improve the relationship you have with yourself.

2. Lean into your femininity

What does it mean to be a woman? When do you feel most empowered? Stepping into our divine feminine is about embodying the compassion, love, empathy, emotional bonding, calm and inner peace women intrinsically have. By exercising our creativity and nourishing our soul with practices that evoke positive energy, we become more in tune with what it is to be a woman.

3. Do one thing that scares you

From impromptu boudoir sessions, through to skydiving out of an aeroplane, there’s no right or wrong when it comes to pushing your limits. Taking a leap (metaphorically or actually!) can evoke a great deal of self reflection and give us a sense of achievement. When we look at ourselves with kinder eyes and a sense of pride for what we’re capable of doing, it allows us to write resolutions and goals which come from a place of self-celebration and trust in our ability to succeed, rather than a place of deficit.

4. Create space for sensuality

Sensuality doesn’t mean sexuality. It’s about experiencing the small pleasures associated with our five senses. Choosing to be more intentional with your time in 2023 means you create space to relish in life's smaller pleasures. Perhaps it’s the way the sun dances across your skin in the early morning, the smell of coffee brewing, the feeling of a silky robe against your tummy or the sound of your loved ones laughing. The idea is to prioritise yourself and slow down, so you can soak up more of what’s around you.

5. Approach your resolutions with kindness

You don’t have to create a ‘new you’ just because it’s a new year. In fact, you don’t have to change a thing if you don’t want to. Penning small resolutions which spark creativity, instil confidence in our abilities and allow for self-reflection are much more powerful than placing importance on the number on a scale or striving to be someone we simply are not. You are enough just as you are and I can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store for you.
